THE HISTORY OF SOUND HEALING

The sound journey comes from the very beginning of time....

Where did sound begin? There are two versions of how the universe began. The religious version and the scientific version. We’re going to talk about the scientific one in very loose terms.

Of course, neither version can be proved without a shadow of doubt. However, many scientists believe that billions of years ago all matter (black hole or singularity) in the universe was in one place, over time this singularity began to expand causing the Big Bang Theory. The prevailing movement caused fluctuations and oscillations which allowed areas of less or more pressure to push or pull apart, hence, what we now recognise as galaxies were created.

This is where we begin to understand the meaning of sonic gravity and the theory that all sound is caused by gravitational force (soundwaves), even our own speech.

Two scientists, namely Robert Hooke and Hans Jenny recognised that sound exhibits antigravity effects, which means the theoretical concept of soundwaves being able to exhibit negative gravitational mass, meaning they would ‘fall’ up in Earth's gravitational field rather than down. In simple terms sound floats upwards.

Throughout history, there is mention of light and dark within sound. The ancient Greeks, Jews and Egyptians, had their own theories all very similar in concept, that sound has the ability to organise matter. One proof of this is a giant hexagon on the North Pole of Saturn. This was created by cymatics sound (cymatics will be discussed in another post). Interestingly there are also hexagonal craters on the Moon and Mars.

*We  have talked about sound as being able to organise matter. It’s time to delve deeper into this concept. If we think about sound as a force, we can draw our attention to gases escaping the Earth (hydrothermal vents), many of these are beneath the ocean, the bubbles created from this event are many different sizes. The jostling of these bubbles creates a sound that John Stuart Reid identifies as sonic scaffolding. It basically is a rumble containing thousands of frequencies. In this environment there are literally millions of bubbles, they create cymatic (hexagonal) patterns. Which if we consider this same force helped shape the early Universe, they also triggered and began life, in other words, sound.

Sound frequencies in water can organise water molecules into the morphologies (the formation and organisation of living things), of early life forms. If we look back far enough we will discover that the hexagonal shape (cymatic)  has been in existence in nature for millions of years and still exists today.

Fossils from the Jurassic period (200 million years ago) show definite cymatic formations, coming through to the Cretaceous period (65 million years ago) also have the same variants of creation. If we look at today's creatures, starfish have the definitive 5 point star that cymatics is famous for. Many flowers have similarities with their petal formations.

When it comes to the history  and definitions of sound, light and music therapies, the connection and knowledge between Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Greeks is very difficult to separate, as they are very intertwined.

The interesting question is when the Egyptians built the Great Pyramid and Kings Chamber, which was a feat beyond imagination; did they know of the healing resonant properties of such a magnificent structure?  It has been discovered if someone suffering from chronic pain was to lie in the sarcophagus of the Kings Chamber and tone at a pitch of 117 hertz for a certain length of time, the possibility of their pain dissipating completely is very high. It is believed by many Egyptologists that the Great Pyramid is like a resurrection machine. There is documentation of priests lightly touching with their fingertips the edge of the sarcophagus and performing a vocal glissando (continuous flowing sound). Thus allowing full healing with vibration and sound.

Ancient Egyptians built hospitals in major towns. Many of these had healing chambers, very similar to a modern day bath tub. These would have had wonderful reverberative qualities. Music was known as “physic for the soul” by  Egyptian priest-physicians, who would listen to music healers play beautiful healing music on flute, lyre and a wonderful little instrument called a sistra. Some pharaoh over the years actually retained healers to specifically play and sing inside the pyramids.

One of the main connections with Ancient Egyptians and Ancient  Greeks, is the movement of philosopher Pythagoras, who travelled Egypt extensively and gained much knowledge from the Egyptians regarding musical instruments and their healing abilities.
